Top Tips
Distract Your Dog While You Are Away
A great way to help your dog cope with anxiety is to distract them while you are away. Dogs will generally feel most anxious straight after you have left, so it's generally best to have an immediate distraction in place. Leaving a TV or radio on, with voices speaking rather than music, can help immediately distract your dog while also reducing the feeling of being alone. Other people have had success with simply providing their dogs with toys or a bone to play with until they tire themselves out. Whatever option you choose, a distracted doggy is likely to be feeling less anxious than one sitting at the door waiting for you to return home.
Take Your Dog For A Long Walk Before You Leave
As we all know, going for a walk is the best part of the day for most dogs. Taking your dog for a nice long walk before you leave, will help tire them out and leave them in rest mode. Chances are your dog will be ready for a sleep rather than worrying about you disappearing. If you know your dog will be left alone for a few hours consistently each day then another solution is to hire a dog walker to pop in each or every other day. Dogs are smart and will quickly pick up on routines, so if they have something to look forward to that will break up the time apart it can help reduce their anxiety whilst you are away.
Practice Being Away From Your Dog
For mild forms of anxiety, having your dog sleep alone at night can help them become more familiar with the process of you leaving and returning, making it less stressful when you leave during the day. For more severe forms of separation anxiety, getting your dog to sleep in a separate room may be difficult. The best option is to start small by spending a few minutes apart from your dog at a time and not making a big fuss when you reunite with them. The aim is to both gradually increase the time spent apart and help normalize your return, so when you must leave for real, their anxiety symptoms should not be as problematic as before.
